IS THE UNBORN BABY A HUMAN BEING?

The life of a baby begins long before he or she is born.  A new individual human being begins growing in the mother's uterus at fertilization, and if the baby's life is not interrupted, he or she will someday become an adult man or woman.   Worldwide, millions of unborn babies are killed each year.  In the United States over 32 million have been killed in the 21 year since abortion was legalized, and more than 1.5 million are killed each year.1

Before discussing abortion, however, it is important to review the scientific facts about human development.  Starting at birth and traveling back in time, the life of each human being can be traced back to the beginnings of his or her own individual fertilization.

19WEEKS: SURVIVED!
This is Kenya King, born at 19 weeks, or just a little more then 4 1/2 months after her life began. Pictured here with her mother, Lisa King, Kenya weighed only 18 ounces when she was born in Florida on June 16, 1985. When this photo was taken, Kenya weighed 5 pounds.[2]  Babies can routinely be saved at 21 to 22 weeks after fertilization, and sometimes, like Kenya, they can be saved even younger.3

18 WEEKS: "VIABLE" TOMORROW?

This is an unborn baby only 18 weeks old, just before viability. Viability is the time when the baby is able to survive outside the mother. Not long ago viability was at 30 weeks; then it was 25 weeks.  Now viability is even earlier. What will it be tomorrow? Science is constantly making progress in this area.[4]

15 WEEKS: PERFECTLY FORMED
This beautiful unborn baby is 18 weeks old, just one week younger then Kenya was when she was born. Inside the mother, this baby could have been legally killed. However, outside of the mother the baby would be fully protected by law.Photo: Lennart Nilsson

14 WEEKS: A MIRACLE OF DEVELOPMENT
The baby in this picture is less than 14 weeks old. At this age, the heart pumps several quarts of blood through the body every day. A twelve-week-old unborn baby has developed the body parts required to experience pain, including all of the nerves, spinal cord and thalamus.6

FACTS Most abortions are suction curettage abortions.  A sharp-edged plastic tube is inserted into the uterus.  It cuts the unborn baby into pieces.  A suction machine, many times more powerful than a vacuum cleaner, sucks out the pieces of the baby and the placenta.  In later abortions, sharp instruments are used to cut the  unborn baby out of the uterus piece by piece.  chemicals are used to induce labor and death.

The inserted picture shows details of the legs of a baby about 16 weeks old.

11 WEEKS: ALL ORGAN SYSTEMS FUNCTIONING
T
hese little human feet are perfectly shaped. The baby could stand on an adult's little fingernail. The baby even has eyelids, nails, and fingerprints.7  From this age on, there is only growth in size and maturation of the organs already present. All organ systems are functioning. The baby has a skeletal structure, nerves, and circulation.8

FACTS A Pregnancy normally covers 40 weeks counted from the first day of the woman's last menstrual period.  Fertilization takes place about two weeks into her cycle. The dates shown on this web page are from the time of  fertilization, not the onset of the mother's last menstrual period.
