SUPPORT PARENTAL NOTIFICATION

Sponsor:  A. Reilich, Bill # A.6439

This bill would require 48 hours notification of one parent (custodial parent) prior to the performance of an abortion on an unemancipated minor.

NYSRTL supports parental notification legislation, which recognizes the guiding role a parent in raising  a child, and acknowledges the agonizing pain that accompanies a teenager’s unexpected pregnancy.  It protects the parent’s right to know while at the same time providing the minor girl with the support, counsel and advice she needs from parents at this critical time.

Medical procedures require permission from parents because there is risk involved which a minor child does not have the maturity or judgment to manage.  In the event of complications from an abortion (e.g., infection, allergic reactions to anesthesia, excessive bleeding), a parent must be informed in order to get medical attention for a child immediately, and avoid the risk of further damage or death.
