British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Appoints Key Abortion Advocates

by Steven Ertelt

London, England  -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is following in the footsteps of his pro-abortion predecessor, Tony Blair, and appointing key abortion advocates to top governmental posts. That will make it more difficult for pro-life groups to try to reduce the nation's high number of abortions.

The European Life Network tells LifeNews.com that "Brown has appointed several pro-abortion ministers to life-related portfolios in his new UK government, a move which means any reform of the abortion law is likely to lead to more abortions."

ELN pointed out some of the top spots pro-abortion MPs occupy in the Brown government.

Dawn Primarolo has been appointed the minister of state for health and she has previously voted for abortion on demand to be extended to Northern Ireland.

Another MP, Ben Bradshaw, has also been appointed a minister of state for health and he supports the Abortion Act of 1967, which legalized abortion in England.

Ann Keen, appointed a parliamentary under-secretary of state for health; Jim Knight and Beverley Hughes, who have been appointed a minister of state for children, families and schools; and Gareth Thomas, appointed a parliamentary under-secretary of state for international development are also abortion advocates.

ELN is especially concerned that each of these key appointees occupy positions that have a direct bearing on the abortion laws and guidelines in Britain.

That Brown would appoint so many opponents of legal protection for unborn children is not surprising.

A leading British pro-life group told LifeNews.com last September that England's next Prime Minister was strongly in favor of abortion.

Anthony Ozimic, the political secretary for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) said the previous finance minister "has voted consistently in favor of abortion."
"In 1990, he voted with the pro-abortion lobby no fewer than 16 times," Ozimic explained.

Those votes included three backing unlimited abortion until birth, including abortions on disabled unborn babies, SPUC indicated.

Brown also cast two votes for unlimited abortions early in pregnancy, voted once to promote abortion in Northern Ireland, once to back abortions in cases of multiple pregnancies, once for the dangerous abortion drug RU 486 (which has killed two women in England), and he cast pro-abortion votes on eight other occasions.

SPUC also had recorded the MP voting five times in favor of destroying human embryos in scientific experiments such as embryonic stem cell research.

Ozimic says Brown doesn't just promote abortion in Britain but internationally as well.

"More lately, Mr. Brown launched the International Finance Facility to raise money for the Millennium Development Goals, goals which the British government interprets as including a universal human right to abortion on demand," Ozimic explained.
