HUMANS CLONED IN AMERICA!
Catholic Conference Condemns Cloning Of
Human Embryos By Private Researchers
The NYS Catholic Conference, speaking on behalf of
Edward Cardinal Egan and all of the Catholic Bishops of New York
State, reiterated its strong condemnation of efforts to clone
human embryos as a violation of the sacredness of human life.
"Cloning is a radical assault on human
dignity," said Kathleen M. Gallagher, the Conference's
associate director for pro-life activities. "It distorts
and insults the natural process of human procreation, family
relationships and the intrinsic value of human life. Cloning
reduces the precious gift of human life to a commodity to be
used and discarded at will. The idea that such procedures are
somehow appropriate if the embryos are not brought to term or
are used for medical research is repugnant. Whether the purpose
is to create a full-term baby or a source for stem cells,
cloning remains morally unacceptable and a grave violation of
human rights."
Richard E. Barnes, interim executive director of
the Conference, added "The Bishops sympathize with those
who suffer from debilitating diseases for which they
understandably seek medical cures. However, the cloning and
subsequent destruction of human life is not appropriate under
any circumstances, even when others in society could potentially
benefit."
The Catholic Conference, which represents the
Bishops of New York in public policy matters, is calling on all
branches, of government to ban the practice of human
cloning for any purpose. Such a ban should apply to privately
and publicly funded research.
